Is Now the Time to Upgrade Your Central AC?

This summer might be the year that you invest in an upgrade for your air conditioner. If your existing unit is already older and needing repairs run often, these are signs that it’s time to make the upgrade instead putting it off and possibly facing an air conditioner breakdown later in the season.

Just give us a call when you’re ready to schedule AC installation in Wilmington, OH. We understand that there are a variety of different factors to consider when it comes to whether or not it’s time to upgrade. We’re also here to answer all of your questions and help you every step of the way. If you’re not quite ready to make an upgrade, we may be able to help you with some AC repairs to get you through the rest of the summer so you can plan ahead for an upgrade.

Signs You Need AC Replacement

Air conditioners are only designed to last for 10 to 15 years on average. If your AC unit is anywhere within that range or even past the 15-year mark, it is increasingly possible that you’ll have to replace the unit in the near future. The manufacturer’s warranty usually lasts for the first 10 years or so of an air conditioner’s life. Past that, it’s up to you to make repairs when the need arises.

If our team checks out the unit and the cost of repairs is up into the thousands of dollars, it may be time to consider an AC replacement. Depending on the age and overall condition of your unit, it may not make sense to put thousands of dollars into a single repair when you may not get enough extra life to make the investment worthwhile. That money may be better spent on a brand-new air conditioner.

When Repairs May Suffice

Repairs make sense in the first 10 years of an air conditioner’s life or when it is covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. Past 10 years, repairs might make sense as long as they are reasonable in cost. Like we already mentioned, you don’t want to spend thousands of dollars on a single repair when the rest of your unit is still aging. As long as repairs are relatively inexpensive, it makes sense to maintain your existing unit instead of investing in a new one.

Tips for Upgrading Your AC

When it is time to invest in an upgrade, there are a few things you need to consider. First is the energy efficiency rating of the unit you are selecting. Air conditioners and heat pumps are operating cooling mode both get rated on a SEER2 scale. While there is a minimum efficiency value in place, investing in a higher efficiency model will offer benefits across the unit’s entire lifespan.

Having a high-efficiency air conditioner or heat pump for cooling can mean that your home maintains a comfortable temperature more consistently while also consuming less energy in the process. We also encourage you to, create good habits from the beginning to keep up with maintenance for your air conditioner all along.

This means changing out the air filter on time, rinsing out the condensate drain line, and paying attention to even the smallest signs that something inside of the unit is going wrong. This is the best way to ensure a long lifespan for your new air conditioner.
